# Access files with a VFS connection

After you have created a VFS connection, you can use the VFS Open and Save dialog box to access files in the PDI client.

Follow these instructions to access files with the VFS Open or Save dialog box in the PDI client.

1. In the PDI client, select **File** > **Open URL** to open a file or **File** > **Save as** to save a file.

The VFS Open or Save As dialog box opens, as shown in the following example:

![Open dialog box in the PDI client](/files/LZuqVuW7PzIFd1BCw2Kr)

Recently accessed files appear in the right panel.
2. Navigate to your folders and files through the **VFS connection** category in the left panel.

When you select a folder or file, the **Recents** drop-down list updates to show the navigation path to your file location.
3. (Optional) Click on the navigation path to show and copy the Pentaho file path, even if it is a Virtual File System (VFS) path. See [Pentaho address to a VFS connection](/pdia-data-integration/10.2-data-integration/data-integration-perspective-in-the-pdi-client/virtual-file-system-browser/pentaho-address-to-a-vfs-connection-open-a-transformation.md) for details on the Pentaho file path for the Virtual File System.
4. Select the file and click **Open** or **Save** depending on whether you are opening or saving a file.

The Open or Save As dialog box closes when you have access to your folder or file.

**Note:** If you are not connected to the Pentaho Repository, you can select a folder or file in the Open or Save As dialog box, click on it again, and rename it.
