# Get records from stream

This step returns records that were previously generated by another transformation in a job. The records were passed to this step using one of the streaming input steps (for example, [Kinesis Consumer](https://github.com/pentaho/documentation/blob/main/PDIA/9.3/PDI/Transformation%20steps/PDI%20transformation%20steps%20reference%20\(overview\)/Kinesis%20Consumer=GUID-E0B168BC-DEAE-4DC6-B005-625B987790D7=6=en=.md), [Kafka consumer](/pdia-data-integration/9.3-data-integration/pdi-transformation-steps-reference-overview/kafka-consumer.md), etc.), which are available in the Streaming category of transformations. You can enter the metadata of the fields you are expecting from the previous transformation in a job.

**Note:** This step produces one or more rows and cannot be placed within a stream. It must be the first step in a stream since it produces rows. If you want to add this data to an existing stream, you need to use a join step.
